  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: Several publications appeared in Russian mass media on the
  10.        problem of HIV transmission during the next Goodwill Games to be held in
  11.        St. Petersburg in summer 1994. The most radical HIV preventors proposed
  12.        to cancel the Games in order to prevent HIV spread and to protect us
  13.        (Russians) from epidemic. Several AIDS centers offered to organize
  14.        24-hour HIV testing laboratories and AIDS clinics. METHODS: It is
  15.        absolutely clear for us that such measures are very costly and
  16.        unnecessary. Moreover they neglect international experience that the
  17.        successful HIV interventions should stress AIDS awareness and HIV
  18.        education rather than AIDS fearmongering. So the Pasteur Institute
  19.        together with the International AIDS Project have proposed and begun to
  20.        realize very different plan of action. RESULTS: Our programme focuses on
  21.        promoting AIDS awareness through public information and education as
  22.        well as promoting of safe sex. Different materials on HIV/AIDS and safe
  23.        sex will be produced and distributed before and during the games.
  24.        Special attention will be paid to condoms. CONCLUSION: The realization
  25.        of our programme will help to promote not HIV but AIDS awareness during
  26.        the 1994 Games.
